Schumacher will be champion - Brawn

Ross Brawn has tipped Michael Schumacher to become this year's world champion on his return to Formula 1 action.

Although Schumacher will be the oldest driver in the field and has not raced in F1 since the end of 2006, Brawn thinks that the seven-time champion will confound his critics and come out on top.

"If I had to bet on any of them then it is clear that Michael will become world champion," Brawn has been quoted as saying by the German newspaper Bild.

"Michael is now more relaxed. When he retired in 2006, F1 was a burden for him. Now I can sense his old enthusiasm."

Brawn does think, however, that it may take a little bit of time for Schumacher to get fully up to speed - which may not happen in time for the first race of the season.

"I do not think he will come out and win the first grand prix. He will need a few races to familiarise himself with the other cars and the many new drivers. Then I hope to see the old Schumacher," added Brawn.

"This has always been his strength anyway: to learn and adapt amazingly quickly."

In terms of car i think they have the advantage and chances, about shoe licker, we still need to observe, he seem to be doing well for the gp2 test. Though i wouldnt have bank in for title contender but well we never know.

Mercedes and Ross Bawn are just making it painfully obviously who is their number 1, wonder what Nico is planning now.

Mercedes can say whatever they or Brawn wants to but unfortunately he is in a position with the engineering lead and the caliber of his men to make these bold statements as it will take something special for them not to be competitive amongst the top 2 or 3 teams.

If an uttlery useless donkey like shamilton can win a title in 2008 with so many spins, mistakes, cashes but utlimately the best car in the field then someone who is definitely more skilled with a dominant car can easily win a title. just like they did in 2009. This is why no one is daring to say " haha oh look who's talking...." or something along those lines.

i think this is very normal.. ross brawn trying to make people think that he has a champ!! a very old champ

they just can't forget all the cheating victory days

although i think mercedes will be good but hope they won't be that good and schum will not be the champ again

and as tension said not fair that nico for sure will be no 2 and he know that even before the season start..

I am pertty shure he will win races, but the title remains to bee seen.
He does once agian have plenty of thing in his favor, a strong team , Russ brawn off course, and last but not least his good friend Jean Todt in charge at FIA. If he can win the championship again after so long whitout dirty trikcs i will take my hat off for him.

Yes this is what I want to see, no dirty tricks and with Nico allowed to race him hard. Unlike what they did to Rubens or Irvine for example.

But I wont put my money on that happening. The Deitre Zetesche has already made it clear that the call to make Shoelicker no: 1 is upto Ross. What is that supposed to mean? They shouldn't be even talking about that possibility if they are really aiming for equality in the team.

It seems to becoming painfully obviuos that he needs number 1 status to succeed. Ross Brawn already started speaking like his number one saying he is going to win the championship. Nico must be feeling so happy right now..

Superstitious Schumacher wants Nico's number

Michael Schumacher has asked to switch race numbers with team-mate Nico Rosberg for this season.

Mercedes GP's first signing was Rosberg, and as such he was entered with the FIA under the No.3. This meant that Schumacher was due to take No.4, but Bild newspaper has revealed that he asked to swap with Rosberg. This is a move that will have to be approved by the FIA.

"Ross [Brawn] knows that I prefer to have odd race numbers," he said.

Odd numbers certainly seem to be lucky for him as he won all seven of his world championships racing odd numbered cars: once driving a cars bearing No.3 and No.5 and five times in car No.1.

A car bearing the No.4 has never won the title, and in the last ten years has only recorded seven grand prix wins.

Schumacher is also sure he is fully fit for the challenge ahead. In an interview on his official website he denied reports that the neck injury that halted last year's comeback could be an issue.

"The after-effects of that accident are long gone, that's why I was sure that the neck would not cause any problems," he said." This was one year ago, that's over. I am training since December very carefully and feel extremely fresh and fit. That was one of the reasons why I felt so good in the car in Jerez [for his recent GP2 test]. But then, Formula One is another thing, the G-forces are higher, that's not really comparable. That is why I am looking forward so much to testing in February. Only then the old feeling will be completely back. I can't wait to be back there."
