Button tops first practice at Monza

The reigning world champion's best time was under a tenth quicker than second-placed Sebastian Vettel, with Lewis Hamilton the only other driver in the 1m23s in third.

McLaren began the session with a larger rear wing, similar to its Spa set-up, while Red Bull used its first runs to test the RB6's low downforce aero efficiency with high-visibility paint.

Vettel leads the way in second practice

Quote:Red Bull and Ferrari led the way in Friday's second free practice session at Monza, with Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso setting the pace.

Massa had to call an early halt to his low fuel run after a scary moment at the final corner. The Brazilian looked set to beat Vettel's time, having set personal bests in the first and second sectors, but dropped a wheel off the track exiting the Parabolica, slid into the gravel and only just kept his Ferrari out of the wall.

Mark Webber finished FP2 sixth quickest but, as in the day's earlier session, struggled to match the pace of the other front runners. He was denied an opportunity to improve when the Red Bull team ordered him to stop his car on track at the first Lesmo with 18 minutes to go, due to a loss of water pressure.

Alonso confident of fighting for win

Quote:Alonso admitted he felt confident for the rest of the weekend.

"I think we are confident, we are happy with the progress, we are happy with the job - but we respect a lot our rivals, our opponents," Alonso told reporters after practice.

"We know how strong McLaren will be here, probably favourites for tomorrow's pole. We know Red Bull's potential of the car we saw all season, with mainly all the pole positions this season, it will be difficult but we are there. We have nothing to worry about at the moment and we will fight."

He added: "It was a normal Friday again, having more test items this Friday than some others, especially aero test. Monza is a very unique layout for the aero settings with a very unique wings so many things to test when you arrive to Monza.

"In previous years we had some tests two weeks before the race, but now with the test ban you need to use Friday to do all these checks, so we concentrated on that and now we need to look at the data and choose the best possibilities and options for tomorrow, but overall I am happy with the car and I think it was a good Friday for us."

a victory at Monza seem to be quite positive looking at the time sheet today

Fernando's lying - he knows that he has no chance of winning. McLaren & Red Bull are too fast. I just don't understand why he say's that he can still 'win the championship' this year, when it's clear that the Ferrari is not fast enough.

things can change quick, they know it, they just have to make it work, remember how much shamiltard's car improved after the 1st fly-away races?

heck the F10 is quick again in the few races before Spa

PR talk my dear, you need to have such a driver with such enthusiasm to lead the team, this is what team Maranello want,they want such driver in their team.

Mclaren vs Redbull again as expected with Mclaren looking to edge out for pole.

The interesting thing is Redbull is nowhere near the top end of the speed traps yet they are very quick in the corners to make up the laptimes.

Your a fool if you don't add Alonso to that mix, but it's quite obvious you do it on purpose! Too repulsed by the Ferrari logo on his overalls?

Yes it is jenni, I have not seen him say anything about Alonso for the longest time.

I dont see a necessary to start an avoidable fight, just because he do not think Ferrari is competitive base on the FP3 result . I agree with the time sheet yesterday and i think the victory chances might be high BUT i am puzzle with their race pace too. So his reply is pretty common . ali has his/her opinion too as above reply, nobody seem to care of quoting him too. So why with everything come from tension has to be so serious

Yes it is jenni, I have not seen him say anything about Alonso for the longest time.

You are just looking to create trouble especially when no one was talking to you directly. You have reached the end of the line for a ferrari Hooligan. This is probably the 3rd or 4th time you have been warned, as Jenni always said, do not pick on member directly.
