Who needs what to win the title
Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton are the four men still in with a shout of winning the 2010 Drivers' Championship at the season finale in the UAE.

Two-time Champion Alonso, on 246 points, is favourite to win this year's title as he enjoys an eight-point lead over Webber heading into the final race in Abu Dhabi. Vettel is a further seven points adrift while Hamilton is 24 points behind Alonso.

Here are the permutations:

Fernando Alonso
- A victory or second place in UAE will ensure he wins his third World title regardless of what the other contenders do
- If Webber wins, he needs to finish P2
- If Webber finishes P2, he needs to finish at least P5
- If Webber finishes P3, he needs to finish at least P6
- If Webber finishes P4, he needs to finish at least P8
- If Webber finishes P5, he needs to finish at least P9
- If Vettel wins, he needs to finish at least P4
- If Vettel finishes P2, he needs to finish at least P8


Mark Webber
- Webber can't afford to finish lower than fifth if he wants to stand any chance of winning his maiden Championship
- If he wins, Alonso needs to finish no higher than P3
- If he finishes P2, Alonso needs to finish no higher than P6 and Vettel no higher than P2
- If he finishes P3, Alonso needs to finish no higher than P7 and Vettel no higher than P2
- If he finishes P4, Alonso needs to be finish no higher than P9 and Vettel no higher than P2
- If he finishes P5, Alonso needs to finish P10 and Vettel no higher than P3


Sebastian Vettel
- Any position lower than second will see him finish the season empty handed
- If he wins, he needs Alonso to finish P5 or lower
- If he finishes P2, he needs Alonso to finish no higher than P9 and Webber no higher than P5


Lewis Hamilton
- He needs to win to stand any chance of winning a second title
- If he wins, Alonso needs to finish P11 or lower, Webber needs to finish P6 or lower and Vettel needs to finish no higher than P3


* Should Vettel win the race and finish level on 256 points with a fifth-placed Alonso, then the Red Bull driver will win the Championship. They will both have won the same amount of race victories (five), same amount of second-place finishes (two) and same number of third place finishes (three). The title will be decided by fourth-place finishes which Vettel leads three to two.

* Should Vettel win and Webber is second they'll finish on the same number of points but the German will take the honours as he will have five race victories to the Australian's four

This is what will happen:

The race starts, Vettel P1, Webber P2, Alonso P3.
At the end of the race: Webber P1, Vettel P2, Alonso P3 - (Vettel will let Webber through when there is ten laps left of the race)

The only way I see alonso winning the championship is if he starts the race first or second- but it's unlikely. And Hamilton could make things worse for fernando if he qualify's third. And fernando engine problem.

McLaren determined to fend off Ferrari

McLaren is still determined to beat Ferrari to second in the constructors' championship even though Red Bull has wrapped up the teams' title, says McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

Red Bull's one-two in Brazil put the constructors' crown beyond its rivals' reach, leaving Lewis Hamilton's long-shot drivers' title hopes as McLaren's only chance of taking a championship this year.

Whitmarsh said that while giving Hamilton a chance of overhauling the 24-gap to Fernando Alonso was a priority, McLaren would also have an eye on the 32-point cushion it has over Ferrari in their battle for the constructors' runner-up spot.

"While it was deeply frustrating for every single one of us to finally be ruled out of the hunt for the constructors' championship in Brazil last weekend, we're all absolutely determined to hold on to second position, and to extend the gap over third-placed Ferrari," said Whitmarsh.

"Both Jenson [Button] and Lewis drove absolutely superb races at Interlagos, and the reality is that another double points-finish would likely push us beyond the reach of our closest rivals.

"Even more importantly, we are still in the hunt for the drivers' championship with Lewis, albeit by the very narrow margin of a single point. Nonetheless, we all know that Lewis is a fearsome competitor and is absolutely fired-up to secure a second world title."

He added that with Hamilton's title hopes largely resting on problems hitting Alonso and the Red Bull drivers, McLaren would just do everything to ensure its driver had a perfect race so he could maximise his chances of a second title, even if that possibility now looked remote.

"Let's not forget that Lewis has gone into the final round of the season in the hunt for the title in three of his four Formula 1 seasons - a quite incredible record," said Whitmarsh.

"And, knowing Lewis as I do, he will be absolutely determined to drive a relentless race in order to pressure his rivals as much as possible in order to maximise his position.

"For this final race, the team's role is simple: we must provide Lewis with the support he needs to sustain his title challenge – that will call for faultless reliability, a slick and decisive strategic plan and perfectly executed pitstops from his pit crew.

"It may sound like a long shot, but I'm absolutely convinced that Lewis, Jenson, and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, will all be players in what promises to be an absolutely enthralling world championship showdown."
