Driver line-up set for first F1 test of 2011

The 2011 F1 field assembles in Valencia for the first test of the year starting on Tuesday.

World champion Sebastian Vettel will put the first laps on the Red Bull RB7 on Tuesday before handing over to team mate Mark Webber.

McLaren test driver Gary Paffett will start testing in the team’s 2010 car before handing over to Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, who will both be driving on Pirelli tyres for the first time.

Fernando Alonso will do the first two days of running in the Ferrari F150 which was launched yesterday. Felipe Massa will be in the car for the last day of the test.

Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher will share driving duties in the new Mercedes W02 on the first day of the test.

HRT have not yet announced who will be driving for them but expect new signing Narain Karthikeyan to be at the wheel.

Lotus are not running on the first day of the test, but will be staying in Valencia for an extra day to test in private. Kovalainen and Trulli will share the car on that day.

Bernie Ecclestone has tipped Alonso for the title, but indicated he is unhappy with two Grand Prix races in Spain


Formula One Boss, Bernie Ecclestone, has tipped Fernando Alonso to win the next season. He told Italian newspaper, ‘La Repubblica’ that it would be a very tough season, and he was reticent at making any predictions, but if he was forced to he would go for Fernando Alonso. ==What the hell does that mean? 'if he was forced'.??

Alonso was on the Cheste race track near Valencia on Tuesday testing the new Ferrari 150 for the very first time.
Alonso explained the day had been used only for aerodynamic details and that they would not know until the first race of the season in Bahrain whether the car would be able to fight for the world title. As it was Alonso finished 5th on the day in Cheste after completing 97 laps with no mechanical problems, while Vettel recording the fastest time.

Alonso admitted that he could not wait to get into the new car, as many months had passed since the last race.
‘The first day is always exciting’, he said. ‘There are stronger sensations than normal. It’s like the first day at school’.

concerned however about another of Ecclestone’s comments, describing the fact that Spain hosts two Grand Prix races each year, in Barcelona and Valencia, as ‘a problem which we face’. Asked whether the forthcoming Australian Grand Prix would be the last, Ecclestone responded ‘We can dispense with Australia’.

So a little bit about the tests that took place yesterday.

The session was dry throughout and before lunchtime the morning cloud cover had burnt off, bringing the track temperature closer to the kind of temperatures the teams and Pirelli tyres will experience at races.

Red Bull began the day by unveiling its new RB7 to an expectant press before taking to the circuit to put Adrian Newey's machine through its paces. And it was Vettel who finished quickest of all, a 1:13.769 edging compatriot Nico Hulkenberg's Force India.

Fernando Alonso, who set the pace in the morning session, was unsurprisingly the clear favourite among the home crowd, a legion of red and white Ferrari fans straining to get a glimpse of him through the paddock gates. Every time he parked the Ferrari in the garage a group of his supporters leant over from the grandstand above chanting his name. He finished the day fifth fastest, nearly a second off Vettel's time although little was known about the different fuel loads teams were running. The session ended slightly prematurely after Alonso stopped on the circuit at turn three with only minutes of the session remaining.

Much attention was given to how the new devices would work, notably the movable rear wing. Nico Rosberg was one such driver to try it out although he only managed nine laps after suffering a hydraulics leak early in the morning session.

"I tried the rear wing and that is going to take some getting used to," said Rosberg. "I pushed the button, the thing goes down at the back and you suddenly feel the car go lighter. Then you release the button again before braking and you think 'jeez this thing hasn't actually gone back to its original position'. So yes, it's going to take some time to get used to I think."

Another intriguing point of interest in the paddock was on the Renault and where its exhausts emerge from the bodywork. There are several theories doing the rounds, but the most subscribed one is that they emerge near the front of the floor to improve the effect of the blown diffuser. Understandably, Renault was not taking questions on its latest innovation.

This time we had some red flags. One for Kobayashi and one for Ambrosio. Kovalainen stopped at the entrance of the pits and many of the top drivers had heavy fuel rides, like Alonso, Button, Vettel. "Button struggled to find a suitable balance with the car, and the day came to an early end in the middle of the afternoon following the failure of an internal component." (quote from an article)
